SEO quotes are hard to compare because they rarely sell the same thing. One delivers two articles a month, another monitors rankings, a third fixes technical debt. All three call it SEO. This article breaks the budget into its actual components β with the fixed prices I work for.

- Two blocks, not one: a one-off analysis that says what to do, and ongoing implementation that does it. Buying only the second means paying for work without priorities.
- The price buys implementation time, not promises: β¬890 a month buys up to eight hours of work β not a guaranteed position on Google.
- What almost never appears in a quote: technical debt on the website, approval loops on your side, and the new item that is AI visibility. All three decide the outcome.
1. Why SEO quotes are incomparable
Anyone laying three SEO quotes side by side is usually not comparing prices but three different services sharing one name. The first contains two blog articles a month. The second a ranking dashboard with a weekly report. The third technical repairs to the website. All three cost roughly the same, all three are called SEO β but only one of them solves your actual problem.
So the first useful question is not "what does SEO cost?" but: what exactly am I paying for, and how will we measure whether it worked? Once a quote answers that, the price becomes comparable. Until it does, the cheapest number is usually the most expensive decision.
There is a second, structural reason for the incomparability: SEO falls into two blocks that are often sold mixed together. There is a one-off analysis establishing what needs doing and in what order. And there is ongoing implementation that does it. A quote containing only the second sells you work without priorities β and that burns budget more reliably than any overpriced agency.
2. Block 1: The analysis β and why it comes first
An analysis is not a preliminary step towards the real assignment; it is the part that decides whether everything after it is economical. It answers three questions without which any implementation is guesswork: what technically stops Google from indexing the site cleanly? Which search queries is the site realistically within reach of? And where is existing demand being lost?

AI Visibility Audit

β¬1,200About one week. Worthwhile when visibility inside AI answers is the actual goal.
Expert tip: run the free check first, then decide
The free website check is deliberately not the opening move of a sales process but a genuine basis for a decision: if it finds only two minor points, you need neither a deep-dive analysis nor monthly support. Only when several structural problems coincide does the next step pay off.
3. Block 2: Ongoing implementation β what β¬890 a month stands for
The decisive sentence about ongoing SEO support is this: you are buying implementation time, not placement. Nobody working seriously can promise a position on Google β Google decides the order, not the provider. What a provider can promise is a defined amount of work per month and a measurement you can verify.
With me that block looks like this: the SEO & Content plan costs β¬890 per month on a six-month term and includes up to eight hours of implementation monthly. Concretely: two AI-assisted, editorially reviewed B2B articles, monitoring via GA4 and Google Search Console with a monthly report, plus a quarterly keyword and on-page audit. Paid annually it is β¬8,900 instead of β¬10,680 β two months fall away.
Equally important is what is not included, and I deliberately write it into every quote: no link building, no paid ads, no translations. Not because those do not matter, but because they are separate budgets, and a plan promising everything does none of it properly.
Comparison: what a monthly budget can buy β and what it cannot
- Position 1 on Google: Google decides the order, not the provider.
- A date for success: effects arrive over months, not weeks β and not on a fixed day.
- Revenue from rankings: visibility is the precondition, not the result. The site itself has to convert.
- Progress without your approvals: no text goes live that nobody on your side signs off.
- Defined implementation time: up to eight hours a month, transparently tracked.
- A fixed delivery volume: two editorially reviewed articles per month.
- Verifiable measurement: a monthly report from GA4 and Search Console β your data, not my numbers.
- Regular course correction: a quarterly keyword and on-page audit.
A documented example of what can come of it
So this does not stay abstract: at EsenTrans, a removals company in WΓΌrzburg, the problem was not content but technology. Instead of a relaunch, a purpose-built WordPress plugin was deployed. The figures come directly from the customer's Google Search Console and are published with permission: 1,768 clicks and 188,946 impressions across the measurement period, weekly clicks up 115 per cent after deployment, average position improving from 19.3 to 11.2 β on a β¬0 advertising budget.
The most important part of this example is not the percentage but the diagnosis: it was a technical problem. A content package would have cost money here and moved nothing.
4. The new item: AI visibility
Since answers increasingly appear inside the search itself β in AI Overviews, in ChatGPT, in Perplexity β there is a cost item that did not exist three years ago. Classic SEO tools measure blue links. Whether an AI names your brand as a source is not something they measure.
This is not a rhetorical addition but a real budget question: if a growing share of research ends in an AI answer, GEO decides whether you appear at all β and a ranking report that looks green can hide that loss completely.
Measure: AI visibility monitoring from β¬149 / month
Daily SERP checks plus the question of whether AI answers cite your content β and who gets named instead. Built in house, running in production, with a separate login per customer.
Assess: AI Visibility Audit β¬1,200
A one-off stocktake with a roadmap: where you are cited, where you are not, and why β crawler access, missing entities, an unclear source situation.
Implement: GEO content optimisation β¬2,500 β β¬4,500
Reworking content so it becomes citable: clear direct answers, clean markup, verifiable statements instead of marketing prose.
5. Four items missing from the quote
The website's technical debt
If a site is slow, hard to index or built on an overloaded page builder, every content measure works against the technology. That repair is its own project and should not be absorbed into a content budget.
Your own time
The most underestimated item. Subject-matter questions, approvals, imagery, access to Analytics and Search Console: without that input the work stalls β and the paid implementation time expires anyway.
The lead time
SEO works over months. A budget scoped to three months mostly measures itself. Anyone unable or unwilling to sustain at least six months should put the money into a channel that answers faster.
Links and ads
Both are separate budgets with their own logic. In my plan they are explicitly excluded β a provider promising both inside the monthly price is either not costing them seriously or cutting somewhere else.
6. What a realistic budget delivers
Three typical starting positions, each with what I actually charge. These are my fixed prices, not market averages and not performance forecasts.
The free website check; where several structural findings show up, the deep-dive analysis from β¬490 with a 90-day roadmap. After that you can implement it yourself, assign it internally, or hire me. No retainer required.
The EsenTrans case. Here a scoped technical intervention is the right answer, not a monthly package. Priced by scope, as a fixed price.
The SEO & Content plan over six months: up to eight hours of implementation monthly, two reviewed articles, a monthly report, a quarterly audit. Annually β¬8,900 instead of β¬10,680.
AI visibility monitoring as a separate, small item alongside the classic work. Measure first, then optimise deliberately.
One note on financing that is often overlooked: consulting services may under certain conditions be eligible for funding. What that means concretely and which conditions apply is covered in BAFA funding for AI & SEO β it can noticeably change what you actually pay.
7. When SEO is the wrong instrument
You need revenue in four weeks
Then SEO is the wrong channel. Paid ads deliver faster, if more expensively per enquiry. SEO is the investment beside it, not the emergency plan.
Nobody is searching for it
For very new or highly explanation-heavy offerings the search query simply does not exist. Demand has to be created first β through other channels.
The website cannot carry it
Sending visitors to a page that does not convince means buying expensive traffic for a bounce rate. Foundation first, reach second.
Nobody can contribute
Without subject-matter input and approvals only generic text emerges. If nobody on your side has time for that, the budget evaporates β better not to start at all.
Quick check: is your SEO quote comparable?
Conclusion
"What does SEO cost?" becomes comparable as soon as the budget is split into analysis and implementation, and once you accept that you are buying working time rather than placement. The entry point costs nothing with me β the free website check tells you whether there is anything to do at all. If more comes of it, the deep-dive analysis is a fixed price from β¬490, and ongoing support β¬890 a month for up to eight hours of implementation.
The most expensive option is none of those numbers. It is buying a monthly package without first knowing whether the problem sits in the content, in the technology or in the offering itself β and not noticing for six months because the report looks green.
